Coumarone Resin

Resin is widely used in rubber, plastics, coatings, and adhesives to improve adhesion, processability, water resistance, and material stability.

Among various modifying resins, Coumarone Resin is widely used in the rubber and industrial coatings industries.

It offers excellent tackifying properties, water resistance, acid and alkali resistance, and good compatibility with rubber, helping improve both processing performance and product durability.

What Is Coumarone Resin?
  • Coumarone Resin: Also known as coumarone-indene resin, it is a low-molecular-weight hydrocarbon polymer mainly derived from coal tar.
It lacks sufficient mechanical strength to be used as a standalone structural material, but offers excellent tackifying properties and chemical resistance. In industrial formulations, it is mainly used as a modifying and processing aid.
  • Resin: Examples include epoxy resin, acrylic resin, and polyester resin, which broadly belong to the category of high-molecular-weight polymers.
These resins generally have higher molecular weights and can form strong network or chain structures after curing. Therefore, they are commonly used as the main structural material or primary raw material in coatings.

Five Core Series of Coumarone Resin

  • Solid:
  1. High-Quality BC Series Coumarone Resin (High-Quality BC Series)

    • Offers the fundamental advantages of light color and low impurity content.
    • Features a precisely controlled narrow molecular weight distribution*, helping ensure consistency and stability in the physical properties of finished products.
    • Narrow molecular weight distribution* – This means that the molecular sizes within the resin are highly uniform, resulting in extremely consistent product quality.

  2.  High-Hydroxy HC Series Coumarone Resin (High-Hydroxy HC Series)

    • Features light color, low impurity content, and good compatibility.
    • Reactive hydroxyl groups (-OH groups)* are specially introduced into the molecular structure, giving the resin polar characteristics and significantly improving adhesion to polar polymers. This makes it an ideal choice for high-end adhesives and specialty modification applications.
    • Reactive hydroxyl groups (-OH groups)* – These can be thought of as “strong chemical suction cups” or “bonding hooks” on the resin molecules.
      1. Significantly improved compatibility: The hydroxyl groups give the resin polar characteristics, allowing it to blend effectively with other polar materials without phase separation.
      2.
Significantly enhanced adhesion: Because -OH groups are chemically active, they can form stronger molecular interactions with the surfaces of other materials. This is a key factor in substantially increasing the bonding strength of adhesives and specialty coatings.
  3. ECO-Solid SC Series Coumarone Resin (ECO-Solid SC Series)
    • This series is engineered for modern, environmentally responsible manufacturing, featuring a light color and extremely low residual oil content.
    • Its low-VOC formulation significantly reduces odor and volatile emissions during production, while maintaining excellent tackifying and modification performance.
    • VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are carbon-based chemicals that readily evaporate at room temperature.
    • The core purpose of a low-VOC grade is to address both odor and environmental toxicity concerns. Key benefits include:
      1.  A cleaner processing environment, free from pungent fumes
      2. Reduced odor retention in the finished product
      3. Easier compliance with low-emission certifications, opening the door to international green supply chains

  • Liquid :
  1. ECO-Liquid LC Series Coumarone Resin

    • Moving beyond conventional solid grades, this series remains liquid at ambient temperature, offering excellent compatibility and exceptional ease of dispersion.
    • It can be added directly into the formulation without high-temperature melting, functioning as a highly effective dispersing aid, tackifier, and softener for rubber compounds — substantially improving mixing efficiency.
    • Compared with conventional solid grades, the ECO-Liquid LC Series offers three core processing advantages:
      1. No melting step required: Liquid at ambient temperature, it can be metered and added directly, eliminating the energy cost of preheating and melting hard, brittle solid resin.

      2. Rapid dispersion: Its excellent flow and compatibility allow it to penetrate and distribute through the base polymer more quickly and uniformly during mixing.

      3. Efficient processing and modification: As a dispersing aid and softener, it dynamically adjusts system viscosity, markedly improving mixing and compounding efficiency.

  1. Water-Based CE Series Coumarone Resin

    • A nonionic emulsion developed specifically for waterborne systems (solids content ≥ 50%), meeting the same low-VOC environmental standards.
    • It delivers excellent water and acid/alkali resistance, making it particularly well suited to waterborne adhesives, tape tackification, and demanding heavy-duty anticorrosive systems such as C3/C4-grade steel structure coatings.
    • The Water-Based CE Series offers three key advantages:
      1. Heavy-duty corrosion barrier:Robust water and acid/alkali resistance, developed for C3/C4-grade steel structure anticorrosive coatings and other high-specification protective systems.

      2. Aligned with international green regulations:Very low VOC content and no pungent odor help formulations pass certification and enter premium eco-conscious supply chains.

      3. Stable break-resistant emulsion:Outstanding mechanical shear stability ensures smooth, uniform blending with waterborne adhesives, tape emulsions, and other waterborne resins, without phase separation.
